Breast Feeding Week is being observed every year from August 1 to 7. The theme for the current week is “Breast Feeding is the healthiest foundation for babies.” It sums up the advantages of breast feeding. Peadiatricians advice mothers to exclusively breast feed babies for the first 6 months. Breast milk is precious for the babies because it contains antibodies that prevent allergy and asthma in the newborns.
Moreover, breast milk is also believed to improve the Intelligent Quotient of babies. Hence, it can be said that for bringing up physically, psychologically and intellectually healthy babies, breast feeding is a must. The “colostrum” in breast milk is considered to be the first vaccine for the babies.
Breast feeding also has emotional advantages: the skin-to-skin and eye contact with the babies help develop a good bond between the mother and the child.
On the direction of KG Hospital Chairman Dr G.Bakthavathsalam and with the active participation of Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Chandrakala Maran and Consultant Paediatrician Dr Srinivasan, KG Hospital along with KG College of Nursing is organizing awareness campaigns on breastfeeding in the Maternity Homes situated in and around Coimbatore.
On those occasions the hospital staff and the nursing faculty and students give valuable tips on breast feeding to expectant and lactating mothers. The mothers are also taught the safe breast feeding techniques (without causing aspiration to babies), and how to store breast milk in refrigerator in case of working mothers who will be hard pressed to follow the feeding time schedule.
On 1st of August 2018, one such campaign was held at the Maternity Home located at Sai Baba Colony in Coimbatore. On 3rd of August 2018, another awareness campaign on breastfeeding was conducting in the Gynaecology Department of KG Hospital.
