Cadaver transplant done in Coimbatore with organs from Erode
The vital organs of a road accident victim, declared brain-dead was transported from Erode to Coimbatore for organ transplantation.
In a joint effort with city police, the organs were transported in just an hour as a green corridor was set up between the two cities.
M. Babu (38), a resident of Erode, was involved in a road accident while riding his two-wheeler on December 7. Scans revealed that the brain had become dysfunctional as he had suffered severe head injuries. Following this, he was declared brain dead on Wednesday.
His family consented to donate his organs following the declaration.
A team of doctors retrieved the organs on Thursday. The kidney was allotted to a patient in K.G. Hospital in Coimbatore.
The organ reached the hospital by 4 p.m. after which it was transplanted on to a patient.
G. Bakthavachalam, Chairman of K.G. Hospital, thanked the city police for facilitating the expeditious transportation of the organ.
Around 40 city police personnel led by Traffic Inspector K.V. Sadhasivam made way for the ambulance to reach K.G. Hospital from Chinniyampalayam – bordering the city and rural Coimbatore – covering a distance of about 13 km. and 10 signals on the national highway in ten minutes.
