A 28-year old male, who had no blood group matched donor in his family, was struggling on dialysis for the last 2 years. He had previously registered for a cadaver or deceased donor kidney transplantation. Due to long waiting list, he was unlikely to get a cadaver donor in the next 3 years.
After only 7 days of specialised desensitisation treatment, he received a mismatched kidney transplant from his AB positive mother. The boy made a rapid recovery and was discharged, along with his donor mother, in just one week after transplant surgery.
KG Hospital is proud that its team of doctors has done such a complex procedure in almost the same cost as a regular kidney transplant and the patient was discharged in a record time. Our Nephrologist, along with his team of doctors, did the first ABO mismatched kidney transplant in the country in April-2009 in CMC, Vellore, and we are happy that the same has been done in
KG Hospital also successfully.
Contrary to the myths, kidney transplant is the best form of treatment for end stage kidney patients. It is not only cost-effective, but also lets the patients live their life to their full potential for the longest possible time. Approximately, 30% of patients who want a kidney transplant do not have a blood group matched donor. Without transplant, patients end up getting long term dialysis, which is costly (Rs. 3lakhs per annum), affects their quality of life (depend on others and difficult to continue work) and compromise their long term survival (average survival 3-6 years).
The average waiting time for cadaver transplant is increasing and is at present more than 3-4 years.
ABO mismatched transplant is a boon for dialysis dependent patients. For this type of transplantation, unlike most centres, we employ a treatment regimen, which selectively removes the ABO blood group barrier alone without affecting the overall immune system of the patient. Thereby the patients do not have long term side-effects. The long term survival in this new type of transplant is as good as the regular live transplant.
