KG Hospital successfully performed triple organ transplantations of a liver and two kidneys, harvested from a “brain dead” patient on October 30, 2017.
It took over 10 hours for the medical team, consisting of 10 doctors and 140 supporting staff, to complete the liver transplantation and four hours to complete the kidney transplantations, according to our Chairman Dr G.Bakthavathsalam..
Dr.G.Bakthavathsalam said the team led by him that performed the cadaver liver and kidney transplants included Dr.V.P.Shanmuga Sundaram, Dr.Senthil Kumar, Dr.Kirubakaran, Dr.Jahangeer, Dr.N.M.Balakrishnan, Dr.Illangovan Veerappan, Dr.Krishnan, Dr.Selvakumar, Dr.Srilatha, Dr.Ramaswami, Dr.Kumanan, Dr.Palanisamy, Dr.Varma, Dr.Vijayakumar and Dr.Deepa Varma.
Dr Bakthavathsalam said that the donor happened to be a 22-year-old Amit Dutta, an unmarried engineer from Chattisgarh, who joined as a trainee in a private organization in Coimbatore. He was the only son to his parents.
On the fateful day of October 24, 2017 while he was walking along the road, talking over cellphone with his mother, a vehicle knocked him down from behind and sped away.
The neurosurgeons of KG Hospital gave an aggressive treatment but the patient did not respond. He was declared “First Brain Dead” at 12.20 p.m. on October 30, 2017 and was finally re-declared “Brain Dead” at 6.15 p.m. on the same day. Subsequently, with parental consent 8 vital organs such as the heart, the lever, kidneys, eyes, skin and bone were harvested from the “brain dead” patient.
Dr Bakthavathsalam termed the victim’s father Mr Gopinath Dutta as a “great philanthropist who has done a great act of charity even at the calamitous situation. We will pray to God to bless the parents to recover from this rude shock,” the Chairman said.
The wife and son of the patient who underwent liver transplantation (shown in the picture) met our Chairman and profusely thanked him for the successful operation.
