Coimbatore Commissioner of Police Mr K.Periaiah flagged off the marathon, which included 5 km and 10 km run and walk through pre-decided route in and around KG Campus, Saravanampatti. He gave a spirited speech on how to stay healthy.
In a brief speech delivered on the occasion, Dr Bakthavathsalam said that the objective of the marathon was to support the poor patients with heart and kidney diseases and to encourage healthy lifestyle.
The Chairman also said that it was a matter of concern that physical activity among the people was on the decline, whereas, consumption of fast food or junk food was on the rise. Such a change in the lifestyle was causing many diseases.
Dr Bakthavathsalam said that for leading a healthy life, daily walking or jogging was a must. This would increase the heart rate from 72 beats a minute to 150 beats a minute, and stimulate blood flow to all the organs.
This would in turn increase the stamina of the body. However, before undertaking any physical activity, it was important to do warm-up exercises, the Chairman added.
The participants included Mrs Vasanthi Raghu, Vice-Chairman of KG Hospital, Dr Ashok Bakthavathsalam, Vice-Chairman of KG Hospital and Managing Director of KGiSL, staff of KG Group of educational and other institutions, doctors, nurses and students.
