An Appeal
Sub : Request for Philanthropic support for "KG Crusade Against Childhood Blindness"
According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 1.5 million children worldwide are blind, of which two thirds (1 million) are in Asia. The leading etiology is corneal apacification (complete blindness) caused by measles and use of traditional eye medicines. The other contributory factors are visual impairment due to unconnected refractive errors, retinal conditions, congenital anomalies and glaucoma. An estimated one hundred children lose their sight every week in India. Nearly 50% of such cases are either treatable or preventable. Poor nutrition, Vitamin A deficiency, measles and premature birth are among the leading causes.
Childhood Blindness is one of the main priorities in VISION 2020. The Right for Sight for blind children assumes importance for the following reasons:
- causes of blindness in children differ much from causes in adults are require different strategies
- delay in treatment of childhood blindness may result in amblyopia
- treatment requires specific training, knowledge, skills and equipment
- the number of 'blind years' in children is much greater compared to blindness occurring in adults
- blind children have a high death rate
Blind children have a lifetime of blindness ahead, which affects their opportunities for education, employment and earing potential. Early onset adversely affects their social and emotional development.
Analyzing the gravity of blindness among poor children, KG Hospital run by K. GOVINDASWAMY NAIDU MEDICAL TRUST, has embarked upon a massive programme titled "KG CRUSADE AGAINST CHILDHOOD BLINDNESS".
