Ongoing Research Trials In Gastenterology
The department of Gastroenterology is currently undertaking the following research initiatives :
- Dcbt 5678 Trial Of Ayurvedic Preparation For Gall Stones Diseases :
This research is being sponsored by Dalmia Center for Research and Development, Coimbatore.
Patients in the age group of 18 to 60 years, having gallstones without any symptoms or any other serious systemic illnesses are eligible for enrollment in this trial. The patient should not possess any serious renal, cardiac, or hepatic impairment. The trial lasts for a period of six months. During the trial period, the research team will review the patient clinically and also conduct periodic ultrasound screening. During the trial period, the medicines and all investigations are provided at no cost for the patients.
- Shanferon Trial For Chronic Hepatitis B :
This is a Drug Controller of India approved trial being sponsored by Shantha Biotechnics, Hyderabad.
This is a multi-centric trial aimed at studying the efficacy of indigenous Human Recombinant Interferon Alpha 2a (Shanferon) in chronic hepatitis B patients.
Inclusion Criteria :
- Patients of either sex between 18 - 60 years age.
- Known HBsag positive for more than six months or HBsag positive with negative AntiHBc IgM
- HBeAg Positive.
- HBV DNA Positive.
- SGPT >1.5 and ULN on at least two or three occasions done at intervals of at least 2 weeks.
- Liver Biopsy with evidence of chronic Hepatitis.
Patients conforming to the above criteria are subjected to a round of pre-evaluation tests, before enrollment for the trial. The trial treatment is for four months. All patients will, however, be kept under observation for a further period of six months after the end of treatment.
During the trial period, the patients are given 5 miu of shanferon daily for a period of four months free of cost. The investigations are also done free of cost.
- Shanferon Trial For Chronic Hepatitis C :
This is a Drug Controller of India approved trial being sponsored by Shantha Biotechnics, Hyderabad.
This is a multi-centric trial aimed at studying the efficacy of indigenous Human Recombinant Interferon Alpha 2a (Shanferon) and Ribavarine in chronic hepatitis C patients.
Inclusion Criteria
- Patients of either sex between 18 - 60 years age.
- SGPT >1.5 and ULN on at least two or three occasions done at intervals of at least 2 weeks.
- Anti HCV Positive.
- HCV RNA Positive.
- Liver Biopsy showing evidence of chronic Hepatitis.
Patients conforming to the above criteria are subjected to a round of pre-evaluation tests, before enrollment for the trial. The trial treatment is for 12 months. All patients responding to the treatment will be kept under further surveillance for a period of six months after the end of treatment.
During the trial period, the patients are given 3 miu of shanferon thrice weekly plus daily ribavarin 1000 - 1200 mg orally for a period of twelve months totally free of cost. The investigations are also done free of cost during the trial period.
- Trial For Diarrhoea Type Of Ibs
This trial is being conducted to study the efficacy of a new molecule called Cilansetron, 5 HT 3 inhibitor, having been introduced for Diarrhoea type of IBS.
This is being sponsored by Solvay Pharmaceuticals , Ahmedabad.
- Trial of Ribavarine in Acute Viral Hepatitis A and/or E :
This trial is being conducted to study the safety and efficacy of Ribavrine in Acute viral hepatitis A and/or E. This study is slated to commence shortly.
This is being sponsored by Dalmia Center for Research and Development, Coimbatore.
