Introduction Of New Dialysis Technique In Coimbatore - CAPD :

CAPD (CONTINUOUS AMBULATORY PERITONEAL DIALYSIS) is a new dialysis treatment for patients with kidney failure. We have successfully introduced this treatment method in coimbatore. This is a procedure in which a small catheter is placed into the abdominal cavity of the patient through which the dialysate fluid is passed into the abdomen to purify the blood in the body. In the last 6 years, we have revolutionized dialysis in patients with diabetes, heart problems, children & in elderly patients through this technique.

CAPD - Infection Free CAPD Programme in a Developing Country

CAPD in our experience is an excellent modality of renal replacement treatment. Patient selection and education is very essential for a good, long term infection free program. Early identification and management is important towards infection control. Underlying ischemic heart disease is the major cause of mortality.

We have been rated as one of the " BEST CAPD CENTRES IN THE WORLD" because of our high success rates.

Salient features of CAPD :
  • Leading CAPD center in India.
  • Infection free program.
  • Ideal for diabetics, old aged, children and heart patients.
  • Treatment at home, no hospital visits.
  • No diet restrictions.
Kidney Transplantation : Has been associated with more than 1000 kidney transplantation so far. Individually, performed more than 300 kidney transplantation surgeries. All type of transplantation are performed including
  • Live Transplantations (where transplants are being performed among close relatives)
  • Paediatric Kidney Transplantations (where kidney transplantation's are performed in children)
  • Cadavar Kidney Transplantation (where kidneys are taken from brain dead patients & are transplanted to needy recipients)

Snake Bite

There are over 500 venomous species of snakes available all over the world. These snakes belong to Elapidae, Viperidae and hydrophidae groups. In India, Saw - Scaled Viper and Russels viper bites are more common. The venom is a mixture of enzymes and non enzymatic compounds. Because of the actions of the venom, the patient gets local and systemic signs of envenomation. The manifestation starts within minutes. The local features include swelling, erythema, necrosis and gangrene. There is always secondary bacterial infection. Systemic manifestations include DIVC, renal failure, neuro toxicity, cardio toxicity and muscle necrosis. Management of a snakebite victim involves proper diagnosis of the complications, a complete investigation towards identifying organ damage , wound care, antibiotics, supportive treatment for organ damages, etc. This specific treatment involves in giving anti snake venom to neutralise the actions of the venom. There has been no standard protocol in treating patients with snake envenomation. We have developed a protocol at KG hospital based on the severity of envenomation in to mild, moderate and severe categories depending on the severity of DIC, rate of spread of cellulitis, presence or absence of cardio toxicity, neuro toxicity, muscle damage and hypotension. The doses are 20, 40 and 60 vials of anti snake venom per day. The dose is titrated according to the severity. In the last 2 years, 84 patients were treated according to these criteria and the results are excellent.

K.G. Kidney Care Foundation :

More than 80% of kidney failure patients are poor & unaffordable. To help these unfortunate patients, we have formed a forum called " KG kidney care foundation" by our patients, who are being treated at our centre, their relatives, friends and philanthropists to exchange views and educate the public regarding kidney diseases and on various types of treatment options available.

The foundation also plans to help poor patients. Any one can join us to support those unfortunate patients who are not able to afford for their treatment.

Contributions could be made on contributors' special days like birthdays, wedding day or any other rememberable day.

CHARITY begins at home and if each affordable family would come forward in helping a poor kidney patient it would make a significant change in the world of kidney care. We have introduced the following schemes to help those in need.

SAVE A LIFE TODAY

This project contributes Rs. 1000/- which will take care of the haemodialysis charges of the patient for one day.

SAVE A TRANSPLANTED KIDNEY

This project contributes Rs. 10,000/- to keep a transplanted kidney alive. This would go towards post transplant medications for a month.

Our Achievements :

So far 1000 poor patients undergoing dialysis has been benefited through this programme.

Landmarks Achieved :
  • Baby sharadha - 2 day old child was brought to KG Hospital with both the kidneys not working. The child was dialysed for 28 days & was saved & today she is at the age of 4 years. Subsequently performed 6 more neonatal peritoneal dialysis.
  • Transporting a brain dead victim from trivandrum to coimbatore for cadavar transplantation - FIRST TIME IN THE COUNTRY.
  • First time in the country performed a complicated transplantation subsequent to 2 hyper acute failed transplantation.
Hypertension clinic & Free Blood Pressure checkup :
  • The first centre to have a clinic for hypertension.
  • "FREE BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK UP" clinic checks up blood pressure for every one who walk into the clinic.
  • Over 3,50,000 individuals were screened so far & 8% of our population were found to have hypertension.
  • Free counseling, treatment & investigations at concessional charges are done for identified patients.
  • "Campaign against the silent killer" - a project formed to identify high blood pressure in student population and to create awareness about hypertension.
