In a powerful demonstration of how timely medical intervention can save lives, doctors at KG Hospital successfully revived a 50-year-old man who collapsed suddenly near the Income Tax Office on Race Course Road on Sunday morning.
The man was found unconscious by bystanders and rushed to KG Hospital in a private vehicle. On arrival, he was in an extremely critical condition—suffering from profound shock, with a barely detectable pulse and a dangerously low heart rate of just three to four beats per minute. Emergency investigations confirmed ventricular fibrillation, a life-threatening cardiac rhythm that can result in sudden cardiac arrest.
Immediate Emergency Response
Without delay and without waiting for identification or the arrival of relatives, the emergency team at KG Hospital initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation.
“Every second mattered,” said Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam, Chairman of KG Hospital, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Coordinated Life-Saving Care
A multi-disciplinary team comprising cardiologists led by Dr. Nithyan, emergency physicians, nurses, and technologists worked seamlessly to stabilize the patient. Once his condition improved, he was shifted immediately to the catheterization laboratory for further intervention.
Coronary angiography revealed a 100% blockage in the Left Anterior Descending (LAD) artery, one of the most critical arteries supplying blood to the heart. Doctors performed an emergency angioplasty, successfully placing a stent to restore blood flow.
Patient Stable and Recovering
Following the procedure, the patient was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU). He is currently stable and under close medical observation, with doctors confirming that the swift response was crucial in saving his life and preventing severe complications.
A Legacy of Immediate Care
Reflecting on the incident, Dr. Bakthavathsalam said it exemplifies KG Hospital’s long-standing commitment to emergency care:
“For 52 years, our focus has been on immediate action in emergencies—without asking questions first. Saving lives has always been our priority.”
This incident reinforces KG Hospital’s reputation for excellence in emergency and cardiac care, highlighting its readiness, expertise, and unwavering commitment to saving lives when every second counts.
