    FAQ

    Common Questions

Find quick answers to the most common dental questions. For clinical advice, always consult our specialists.

    Ask a Specialist
    Is root canal treatment painful?
    +
Modern root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthesia and is virtually painless. At KG Hospital, we use rotary instrumentation and apex locators which make the procedure faster and more comfortable. Most patients describe the sensation as no worse than a routine filling.
How long does a dental implant last?
    +
With proper care and regular maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. The titanium implant fixture fuses permanently with your jawbone. At KG Hospital, our 10-year survival rate is 98.5%, and many patients have had functioning implants for 20+ years.
What is orthognathic surgery and who needs it?
    +
Orthognathic surgery corrects skeletal jaw problems — such as significant underbite, overbite, open bite or facial asymmetry — that cannot be fixed with braces alone. Candidates typically have breathing difficulties, chewing problems, speech issues, or cosmetic concerns related to jaw position. The surgery is planned with a 3D virtual model and is coordinated with orthodontic treatment.
Can I get dental treatment done in a single day?
    +
Yes — many of our procedures are available as single-visit treatments. Root canal treatment, dental extractions, laser gum procedures, and composite bonding are typically completed in one appointment.

    Overview

    What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure to save a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay, infection, or injury. The procedure involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), thoroughly cleaning and shaping the root canals, and then filling and sealing the space to prevent reinfection.

Contrary to popular belief, modern root canal treatment is not painful. Performed under local anaesthesia with today's rotary instruments and dental microscopes, most patients experience nothing more than mild pressure during treatment. The relief from pre-existing toothache pain is often immediate.

    Indications

    When Do You Need
    Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is indicated when the dental pulp — the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth — becomes inflamed or infected. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and cause an abscess. Common warning signs include:

Severe, persistent toothache (especially at night)
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
    Pain on biting or chewing
Swollen or tender gums near a tooth
Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
Recurring pimple on the gum (dental abscess)
    📌 Important

Not all toothaches require root canal treatment. Only an X-ray and clinical examination can confirm the diagnosis. Do not delay — early treatment preserves more tooth structure and has a higher success rate. Book a same-day emergency consult if you have severe pain or facial swelling.

    Step by Step

    The Root Canal Procedure

At KG Hospital, the vast majority of root canals are completed in a single visit of 45–90 minutes. Complex multi-rooted teeth or severe infections may require mULTIPLE appointments.

    1
    Diagnosis & X-ray
Periapical X-ray and clinical examination to confirm pulp status, root anatomy, and extent of infection.
    2
    Local Anaesthesia
Topical gel applied first, followed by local anaesthetic injection. You will feel numb within 2–3 minutes. The entire procedure is painless.
    4
    Pulp Removal & Canal Shaping
Rotary NiTi files shape and clean each canal. Irrigation with sodium hypochlorite removes bacteria and debris.
    5
    Obturation (Filling the Canal)
Canals are filled with warm gutta-percha and a biocompatible sealer to block bacteria from re-entering. Confirmed with an X-ray.
    6
    Crown Placement
A permanent crown is placed 1–2 weeks later to restore strength and function. CAD/CAM same-day crowns available at KGH.
    Separate appointment

    Decision Guide

    Root Canal vs Tooth Extraction

Patients often ask whether they should save their tooth with a root canal or simply extract it. The comparison below helps guide this decision — but always consult your endodontist for a personalised recommendation.

    Clinical Recommendation

Where a tooth is restorable, root canal treatment is almost always the preferred choice. Saving a natural tooth maintains the surrounding bone, avoids the cost and surgery of implant placement, and provides a lifetime of function with proper crown protection.

    Post-Treatment

    Aftercare & Recovery

Root canal treatment requires minimal downtime. Most patients return to normal activity the same day. Following these guidelines helps ensure long-term success.

    ✓ Do's After RCT
Take prescribed painkillers if discomfort occurs in the first 24 hours
Get a permanent crown placed within 2 weeks of treatment
Brush and floss gently around the treated tooth
Eat soft foods for the first 24–48 hours
Attend follow-up X-ray at 6 months to confirm healing
    ✕ Avoid After RCT
Chewing hard or crunchy food on the treated side until crown is placed
Delaying the crown — the tooth is vulnerable to fracture without it
Smoking — impairs healing and increases failure risk
Ignoring persistent pain beyond 3–4 days (contact us)
    FAQ

    Root Canal FAQs

How many sittings does a root canal take at KGH?
    +
Most uncomplicated root canals at KG Hospital are completed in a single sitting of 60–90 minutes. Complex multi-rooted teeth, severely infected cases, or retreatments may require multiple appointments spaced 3–7 days apart to ensure complete disinfection before obturation.
    Is root canal treatment permanent?
    +
Yes — a properly performed root canal followed by a well-fitted permanent crown can last the lifetime of the tooth. KGH's 10-year success data shows over 94% of treated teeth remain functional and symptom-free at a decade. The crown protects the treated tooth from fracture and recontamination.
My RCT was done elsewhere and it's hurting again. Can you help?
    +
Yes — KG Hospital has a dedicated retreatment service. Our retreatment success rate is 80%, significantly above the national average. Bring your previous X-rays if available.
Can I eat normally after root canal treatment?
    +
You can eat once the anaesthesia has worn off (typically 2–3 hours). Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated side until your permanent crown is placed. Once the crown is fitted, you can eat normally without restrictions.
Will I need a crown after every root canal?
    +
In almost all cases, yes. A crown is strongly recommended after root canal treatment because the tooth becomes more brittle once the pulp is removed. Without a crown, the tooth is at high risk of cracking under chewing forces. Front teeth with minimal tooth structure loss may occasionally be restored with a tooth-coloured filling, but your dentist will advise based on your specific case.
Is there any alternative to root canal treatment?
    +
The only alternative to root canal treatment is tooth extraction. While extraction is sometimes appropriate, it leads to bone loss over time and requires replacement with a dental implant, bridge, or denture — all of which involve additional procedures and cost. Wherever the tooth can be saved, root canal treatment is the superior long-term option.

    Severe Toothache?
    Don't Wait.

Dental infections can spread quickly. Our endodontic emergency service provides same-day diagnosis and treatment relief — 7 days a week.

    Oral Cancer — Surgical Management

Oral cancer (oral squamous cell carcinoma) is one of the most common cancers in India, driven by tobacco and betel nut use. KG Hospital's OMS department manages oral cancer within a dedicated Head & Neck Oncology MDT that meets weekly to plan treatment for every new case.

    Early Warning Signs
White patch (leukoplakia) that doesn't rub off
Red patch (erythroplakia) in the mouth
Ulcer or sore that doesn't heal in 3 weeks
Lump or thickening inside the mouth or neck
Difficulty swallowing, speaking, or mouth opening
    Surgical Procedures
Wide local excision of primary tumour
    Selective or radical neck dissection
    Mandibulectomy (marginal or segmental)
Reconstruction: local flaps, pedicled & free flaps
    Tracheostomy where indicated
    KGH Oral Cancer Outcomes

Stage I and II oral cancers treated at KG Hospital show a 5-year survival rate of 95%. Early detection through regular dental check-ups is the most effective strategy — all our dental consultants screen for oral mucosal lesions at every visit.

    TMJ Disorders

    Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw to the skull. Disorders of this joint affect millions — causing jaw pain, clicking, limited mouth opening, headaches, and earache. Most cases are managed conservatively; severe or chronic cases may require surgical intervention.

    Conservative management first:

    Occlusal splint (night guard) therapy
    Physiotherapy & jaw exercises
    NSAID medication & muscle relaxants
    Botulinum toxin injection for bruxism/masseter
    Arthrocentesis (joint lavage) under GA

    Surgical options when needed:

TMJ Arthroscopy — keyhole joint surgery
    Open arthroplasty — disc repair/repositioning
Total TMJ replacement — Biomet/TMJ Concepts prosthesis
    Condylectomy for condylar hyperplasia
    Dentoalveolar Surgery

    Wisdom Teeth & Dentoalveolar Surgery

Impacted wisdom teeth (third molars) are one of the most common reasons for referral to an OMS specialist. At KG Hospital, all wisdom tooth removals are performed by qualified oral surgeons under sterile conditions, with sedation available for anxious patients.

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Recurrent pericoronitis (infection around the tooth)
Cyst or tumour formation around the impacted tooth
Decay in the wisdom tooth or adjacent molar
Crowding or damage to adjacent teeth
    Pre-orthodontic removal to create space
    Procedure at KGH

All surgical extractions are performed under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure. IV sedation ("sleep dentistry") is available for patients requiring all four wisdom teeth removed simultaneously or for highly anxious patients. Recovery is typically 3–5 days.

    FAQ

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery — FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about OMS procedures at KG Hospital. For personalised advice, always consult our specialist team.

How do I know if I need jaw surgery (orthognathic)?
    +
Orthognathic surgery is usually considered when braces alone cannot correct your bite problem. Key indicators include significant difficulty chewing or biting, chronic jaw pain, a noticeable underbite or overbite, facial asymmetry, or obstructive sleep apnoea related to jaw position. Your orthodontist or OMS specialist will evaluate your jaw relationship using X-rays and clinical measurements — a consultation with our OMS team is a good starting point.
Is orthognathic jaw surgery painful? What is the recovery like?
    +
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, so you feel nothing during the procedure. Post-operative swelling and some discomfort are expected for the first 2–3 weeks and are managed with prescribed medications. Most patients are on a soft diet for 4–6 weeks. Swelling subsides over 3 months, with final results visible at 6–12 months. Most patients return to desk work within 2–3 weeks and resume full activities within 6 weeks.
Can wisdom tooth removal be done under sedation at KGH?
    +
Yes. For patients who are anxious, require all four wisdom teeth removed at once, or have deeply impacted teeth under general anaesthesia
What is the white patch in my mouth? Should I be worried?
    +
A white patch that cannot be rubbed off (leukoplakia) or a red patch (erythroplakia) in the mouth should always be evaluated by a dental professional. While many white patches are benign, some represent pre-cancerous changes — particularly in patients who use tobacco, areca nut (gutka/paan), or alcohol. At KG Hospital, we offer same-day biopsy services through our OMS clinic. Early detection is critical: oral cancer caught at Stage I has a cure rate exceeding 90%.
My jaw clicks and hurts when I open my mouth. Is surgery needed?
    +
Jaw clicking and pain are common symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. The vast majority of TMJ cases — estimated at over 85% — respond well to conservative treatment: a customised night splint, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and lifestyle changes. Surgery is only considered for severe, chronic cases that have failed to improve with 6–12 months of conservative management. Our OMS team always exhausts non-surgical options first.
How is a facial fracture treated? Do I need surgery?
    +
Not all facial fractures require surgery. Minor, non-displaced fractures may be managed conservatively with a soft diet and close monitoring. Displaced fractures — those where bone fragments have moved — typically require open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using titanium micro-plates and screws under general anaesthesia. Condylar (jaw joint) fractures in adults are usually managed conservatively with physiotherapy. Our OMS team assesses each fracture individually with CT imaging to recommend the most appropriate approach.
