Microscope-assisted, virtually painless root canal treatment — including complex retreatments and apical microsurgery — by dedicated endodontists with over 22 years of specialist experience.
Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure to save a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay, infection, or injury. The procedure involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), thoroughly cleaning and shaping the root canals, and then filling and sealing the space to prevent reinfection.
Contrary to popular belief, modern root canal treatment is not painful. Performed under local anaesthesia with today's rotary instruments and dental microscopes, most patients experience nothing more than mild pressure during treatment. The relief from pre-existing toothache pain is often immediate.
Root canal treatment is indicated when the dental pulp — the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth — becomes inflamed or infected. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and cause an abscess. Common warning signs include:
Not all toothaches require root canal treatment. Only an X-ray and clinical examination can confirm the diagnosis. Do not delay — early treatment preserves more tooth structure and has a higher success rate. Book a same-day emergency consult if you have severe pain or facial swelling.
At KG Hospital, the vast majority of root canals are completed in a single visit of 45–90 minutes. Complex multi-rooted teeth or severe infections may require mULTIPLE appointments.
Endodontic treatment is not one-size-fits-all. KG Hospital offers the complete spectrum of endodontic procedures.
Standard root canal for first-time treatment of an infected or inflamed tooth. Single or two-visit depending on complexity.
Most CommonWhen a previously treated tooth develops new infection or previous treatment has failed. Microscopy is critical for success.
94% Success RatePeriapical microsurgery to remove the infected tip of the root and surrounding infected tissue when conventional RCT is not enough.
MicrosurgeryPartial pulp removal for children's primary teeth or young permanent teeth — preserving vital pulp tissue to allow root development.
Full diagnosis, cleaning, shaping, obturation and temporary closure in one 60–90 minute appointment. Most suitable for uncomplicated cases.
1 AppointmentHighly specialised treatment for teeth where canals have become blocked by calcification — requires microscopy and CBCT guidance.
AdvancedKG Hospital invests in endodontic technology that directly improves outcomes — not just comfort, but long-term success rates.
Patients often ask whether they should save their tooth with a root canal or simply extract it. The comparison below helps guide this decision — but always consult your endodontist for a personalised recommendation.
| Factor | Root Canal (RCT) | Extraction + Implant | Extraction Only |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural tooth preservation | ✓ Tooth saved | Tooth lost | Tooth lost |
| Jawbone preservation | ✓ Bone maintained | Implant preserves bone | Bone resorbs over time |
| Procedure complexity | Single outpatient visit | 2-stage surgery | Simple extraction |
| Recovery time | Same day | 3–6 months total | 1–2 weeks |
| Long-term cost | Lower overall | Higher (implant cost) | Higher if replaced later |
| Chewing function | Fully restored | Fully restored | Compromised |
| Success / longevity | 97%+ with crown | 98.5% implant survival | N/A |
Where a tooth is restorable, root canal treatment is almost always the preferred choice. Saving a natural tooth maintains the surrounding bone, avoids the cost and surgery of implant placement, and provides a lifetime of function with proper crown protection.
Root canal treatment requires minimal downtime. Most patients return to normal activity the same day. Following these guidelines helps ensure long-term success.
Dental infections can spread quickly. Our endodontic emergency service provides same-day diagnosis and treatment relief — 7 days a week.
Comprehensive surgical management of the mouth, jaws, face, and neck — from complex wisdom tooth surgery to orthognathic jaw correction, facial trauma reconstruction, and oral cancer management.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS/OMFS) is a surgical speciality concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects affecting the mouth, teeth, jaws, face, and neck.
At KG Hospital, our OMS department is one of the most comprehensive in South India — offering everything from routine wisdom tooth removal to complex craniofacial reconstruction, orthognathic jaw surgery, and head & neck oncological procedures within a fully equipped surgical environment.
Our OMS team works closely with the hospital's ENT, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, and radiology departments — ensuring that complex facial conditions receive coordinated, comprehensive care under one roof.
Our OMS department manages the full breadth of surgical conditions of the mouth, face, and jaws:
Corrective jaw surgery for skeletal malocclusions, facial asymmetry, sleep apnoea, and bite problems.
Flagship ServiceFractured jaws, cheekbones, orbital floor, nasal bones, and frontal sinus fractures — emergency and elective reconstruction.
Surgical management of oral, lip, tongue, and floor-of-mouth cancers. Excision, neck dissection, and reconstruction.
Complex and impacted wisdom tooth removal, surgical extractions, cyst enucleation, and bone grafting.
Arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and total joint replacement for chronic TMJ disorders unresponsive to conservative care.
Sialolithiasis (stone removal), sialadenitis, parotidectomy and submandibular gland excision when indicated.
Primary repair and secondary revisions of cleft lip, palate, and alveolar bone grafting for cleft alveolus.
Alveoloplasty, ridge augmentation, torus removal, and vestibuloplasty to optimise denture or implant fit.
Orthognathic surgery (from Greek: "orthos" = straight, "gnathos" = jaw) repositions one or both jaws to correct skeletal discrepancies that cause functional problems such as difficulty chewing, breathing, or speaking — as well as significant aesthetic concerns. It is almost always combined with pre- and post-surgical orthodontic treatment.
Conditions treated with orthognathic surgery:
Available orthognathic procedures at KG Hospital:
| Procedure | Jaw Moved | Indication | Hospital Stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSSRO (Sagittal Split) | Lower jaw | Underbite / overbite correction | 2–3 nights |
| Le Fort I Osteotomy | Upper jaw | Maxillary advancement / impaction | 2–3 nights |
| Bimaxillary Surgery | Both jaws | Severe discrepancies, asymmetry | 3–4 nights |
| Genioplasty | Chin only | Chin projection / asymmetry | Day surgery |
| MMA (Maxillomandibular Advancement) | Both jaws | Obstructive sleep apnoea | 2–3 nights |
Facial bone fractures — caused by road accidents, falls, assaults, or sports injuries — require prompt and precise surgical management to restore both function and appearance. KG Hospital provides 24/7 maxillofacial trauma cover with a dedicated OMS surgeon on-call at all times.
Fractures managed at KGH:
Patients with facial trauma are seen immediately in the KGH Emergency Department. An OMS consultation is available 24/7. CT imaging with 3D reconstruction is performed on-site, allowing surgical planning to begin within hours of arrival.
Oral cancer (oral squamous cell carcinoma) is one of the most common cancers in India, driven by tobacco and betel nut use. KG Hospital's OMS department manages oral cancer within a dedicated Head & Neck Oncology MDT that meets weekly to plan treatment for every new case.
Stage I and II oral cancers treated at KG Hospital show a 5-year survival rate of 95%. Early detection through regular dental check-ups is the most effective strategy — all our dental consultants screen for oral mucosal lesions at every visit.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw to the skull. Disorders of this joint affect millions — causing jaw pain, clicking, limited mouth opening, headaches, and earache. Most cases are managed conservatively; severe or chronic cases may require surgical intervention.
Conservative management first:
Surgical options when needed:
Impacted wisdom teeth (third molars) are one of the most common reasons for referral to an OMS specialist. At KG Hospital, all wisdom tooth removals are performed by qualified oral surgeons under sterile conditions, with sedation available for anxious patients.
When should wisdom teeth be removed?
All surgical extractions are performed under local anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure. IV sedation ("sleep dentistry") is available for patients requiring all four wisdom teeth removed simultaneously or for highly anxious patients. Recovery is typically 3–5 days.
From first consultation to full recovery — here's what to expect when you're referred to or self-present at our OMS department.
