Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery

Over 98% of our elective general surgical procedures are performed laparoscopically — through small keyhole incisions using a camera and specialised instruments. Patients benefit from significantly less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster return to normal activity compared with open surgery.

🔪 Open Surgery
Large incision (10–20 cm)
Hospital stay: 5–7 days
Return to work: 4–6 weeks
Significant post-op pain
Visible scar
Higher wound infection risk
✦ Laparoscopic Surgery (KG Standard)
3–4 tiny incisions (0.5–1 cm)
Hospital stay: 1–2 days
Return to work: 1–2 weeks
Minimal post-op pain
Barely visible scars
Lower infection & complication risk
01
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Gallstones, cholecystitis, biliary colic
Day Surgery
+

Laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder is the gold-standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones. At KG Hospital, most patients are discharged the same day or within 24 hours. We perform over 600 cholecystectomies annually with a complication rate well below the national average.

Hospital stay: Same day / 1 day
Return to work: 5–7 days
3-port technique standard
General anaesthesia
02
Laparoscopic Appendectomy
Acute & chronic appendicitis
Emergency
+

Laparoscopic appendectomy is performed for both acute and chronic appendicitis. The laparoscopic approach offers faster recovery, lower wound infection rates and the ability to inspect the entire abdominal cavity — important when the diagnosis is uncertain, particularly in young women.

Hospital stay: 1–2 days
Available 24/7 for emergencies
3-port technique
Return to activity: 1 week
03
Laparoscopic Colectomy & Bowel Resection
Colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, IBD
MIS Oncology
+

Laparoscopic colorectal resection for cancer and benign disease offers equivalent oncological outcomes to open surgery with the added benefits of reduced blood loss, faster bowel recovery and shorter hospital stay. Our colorectal team follows enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols.

Right / left / sigmoid colectomy
Anterior resection for rectal cancer
ERAS protocol — eat day 1
Hospital stay: 3–5 days
04
Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery (Fundoplication)
GERD, hiatus hernia, reflux oesophagitis
Keyhole
+

Nissen fundoplication wraps the upper stomach around the lower oesophagus to recreate the anti-reflux valve. Performed laparoscopically, it offers long-term freedom from GERD symptoms in over 90% of carefully selected patients — eliminating lifelong dependency on proton-pump inhibitors.

Total or partial fundoplication
Hiatus hernia repair combined
Hospital stay: 2–3 days
90%+ long-term symptom relief

Hernia Repair — Open & Laparoscopic

Hernias are one of the most common surgical conditions we treat. KG Hospital offers all hernia repair techniques — from day-case laparoscopic repairs to complex incisional hernia reconstructions — using modern mesh materials that provide durable, long-lasting results.

Most Common

Inguinal Hernia

Laparoscopic TAPP, TEP, ETEP repair is our standard — mesh placed in the preperitoneal space. Day surgery in most cases.

Laparoscopic

Umbilical & Paraumbilical Hernia

Laparoscopic or open repair with mesh reinforcement. Day-care surgery for smaller defects. Recurrence rate <1% with mesh repair. Common surgeries we perform for umbilical hernia include ETEP, TPOM, and TARM.

Complex

Incisional Hernia

Component separation technique and biological mesh for large abdominal wall defects. Complex reconstructions managed by our specialist team.

Keyhole

Hiatus Hernia

Laparoscopic repair of stomach herniation through the diaphragm, combined with fundoplication for reflux symptoms.

Emergency

Strangulated Hernia

Emergency surgery for hernias with compromised blood supply. 24/7 availability with expedited theatre access to prevent bowel ischaemia.

Laparoscopic

Femoral Hernia

Laparoscopic TAPP or TEP repair preferred. Higher strangulation risk than inguinal — early repair advised for all femoral hernias.

Proctology & Anorectal Surgery

Anorectal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas are extremely common yet often undertreated due to patient embarrassment. At KG Hospital, our dedicated proctology clinic offers sensitive, confidential and effective surgical treatment.

01
Haemorrhoidectomy & Stapled Haemorrhoidopexy
Grades II–IV internal haemorrhoids (piles)
Day Surgery
+

Stapled haemorrhoidopexy (PPH) is our preferred technique for Grade III–IV haemorrhoids — less painful than conventional haemorrhoidectomy with faster recovery. Grade II haemorrhoids are managed with rubber band ligation in the outpatient clinic. Conventional Milligan–Morgan haemorrhoidectomy performed for Grade IV disease where appropriate.

Stapled PPH — day case
Rubber band ligation — outpatient
Return to work: 3–5 days
Less pain vs conventional excision
02
Fistula-in-Ano Surgery (VAAFT / LIFT / Fistulotomy)
Anorectal fistulas, complex & recurrent
Sphincter Sparing
+

KG Hospital offers the full range of fistula-in-ano treatments including Video-Assisted Anal Fistula Treatment (VAAFT), Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract (LIFT) and conventional fistulotomy — selecting the technique based on fistula type and proximity to the sphincter to preserve continence.

VAAFT — minimally invasive camera
LIFT procedure for high fistulas
Seton placement for complex cases
Continence preservation priority
03
Fissure-in-Ano & Lateral Sphincterotomy
Chronic anal fissure, high anal tone
Day Case
+

Lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) is the definitive surgical treatment for chronic anal fissure unresponsive to medical management. The procedure takes under 30 minutes, is performed as a day case and has a success rate exceeding 95%. Botulinum toxin injection is offered as a non-surgical alternative.

Day case — 30 minutes
Success rate: 95%+
Botox alternative available
Return to work: 3–5 days
04
Pilonidal Sinus Surgery
Pilonidal disease, recurrent sinus, abscess
Minimal Recurrence
+

KG Hospital uses the Karydakis flap and Bascom cleft lift techniques for pilonidal sinus — significantly reducing recurrence rates compared to simple excision and open healing. Minimally invasive sinusectomy (EPSIT) is available for primary and recurrent cases.

Karydakis / Bascom flap techniques
EPSIT for minimally invasive option
Recurrence rate <5% with flap
Hospital stay: Day case to 1 day

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question not listed here? Our surgical team is happy to speak with you.

Contact Us →
Is laparoscopic surgery safe? +
Yes. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is extremely safe and is now the standard of care for the vast majority of general surgical procedures. At KG Hospital, over 95% of elective procedures are performed laparoscopically. Complication rates are consistently lower than for open surgery, and patients experience significantly less pain and a faster return to normal activity.
How long will I stay in hospital after gallbladder removal? +
Most patients having laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) go home the same day or the following morning. You will be able to eat and drink normally within a few hours of surgery. Most people return to desk work within 5–7 days and to all normal activities within 2 weeks.
Do I need surgery for a hernia? +
Not always immediately. Asymptomatic inguinal hernias in men may be observed. However, hernias do not resolve on their own and carry a small risk of becoming strangulated (when the blood supply to the hernia contents is cut off) — which is a surgical emergency. We generally advise repair for symptomatic hernias, all femoral hernias (higher strangulation risk) and hernias causing discomfort or lifestyle limitations.
What is the recovery time for hernia surgery? +
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a day-care procedure in most cases. You can walk the same day and return to light work within 1–2 weeks. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4–6 weeks. Open repair has a slightly longer recovery — typically 2–4 weeks before returning to work.
How is thyroid surgery performed and what are the risks? +
Thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) is performed through a small incision in the lower neck. At KG Hospital we use intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) as standard to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerve — the main nerve to the voice box. The risk of permanent voice change is under 1% in experienced hands. Parathyroid autofluorescence technology helps us identify and preserve the tiny parathyroid glands. Most patients go home the same or following day.
What should I do if I have severe abdominal pain? +
Severe abdominal pain — especially if accompanied by fever, vomiting, inability to pass gas/stool, or a hard rigid abdomen — requires urgent medical assessment. Please proceed to KG Hospital's Emergency Department immediately or call 0422 4042121. Do not delay — conditions like appendicitis and bowel perforations can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
