01
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Management
Stage 1–5, preservation clinic, SGLT2 inhibitor protocols
Preservation Focus+

CKD progresses silently through five GFR-defined stages. KG Kidney Center's dedicated CKD Preservation Clinic focuses on slowing — and in early stages halting — progression through intensive BP control, RAAS blockade, SGLT2 inhibitors (empagliflozin, dapagliflozin), dietary modification and management of anaemia, bone disease and acidosis. We aim to delay or avoid dialysis for as long as possible with a shared decision-making approach.

Annual screening: eGFR + urine ACR for all diabetics and hypertensives
SGLT2 inhibitors — now first-line renoprotective therapy (KDIGO 2024)
Strict BP target <130/80 mmHg with ACE inhibitor or ARB
CKD anaemia clinic — ESA therapy, iron infusion, Desidustat
02
Haemodialysis (HD)
In-centre, satellite, home HD, high-flux, HDF, nocturnal
24/7+

KG Kidney Center's dialysis unit has 40+ dialysis stations operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We use high-flux polysulfone membranes and offer haemodiafiltration (HDF) for improved middle-molecule clearance and survival benefit. We offer next generation dialysis — Theranova & Fresenius Cor-Diax membrane — which offer excellent quality of life. Emergency dialysis is available at any hour for acute kidney injury.

40+ stations — day, evening and overnight shifts available
High-flux HD and online haemodiafiltration (OL-HDF)
AV fistula creation clinic — minimising catheter use
Water treatment plant meeting AAMI standards for ultra-pure dialysate
Emergency acute HD within 2 hours of referral — 24/7
03
Peritoneal Dialysis — CAPD & APD
Home-based, full training programme, 24/7 helpline support
Home-Based+

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) uses the peritoneal membrane as a natural filter, allowing patients to dialyse at home without visiting a centre. KG Kidney Center runs one of Tamil Nadu's most active PD programmes — with dedicated PD nurses providing comprehensive training over 7–10 days, followed by home visits and a 24/7 telephone helpline. APD (automated PD using a cycler machine overnight) is available for patients who prefer hands-free dialysis during sleep.

CAPD — manual exchanges; full independence from hospital visits
APD (automated/cycler) — overnight treatment, free daytime schedule
Tenckhoff catheter insertion under local / regional anaesthesia
Preserves residual kidney function longer than HD
24/7 PD helpline + home visit programme available
Infection rates 1 in 18 patient months — equal to international standards
04
Kidney Transplant Programme
Live donor, deceased donor, ABO-incompatible, paired exchange
1000+ Transplants+

KG Hospital's kidney transplant programme is one of the most active in Tamil Nadu, with over 1000+ transplants performed and a 1-year graft survival rate of 99% — matching international benchmarks. Our multidisciplinary transplant team includes transplant nephrologists, urological surgeons, transplant coordinators, immunologists and psychosocial support workers. We offer ABO-incompatible transplants, paired kidney exchange, and enrolment on the TRANSTAN deceased-donor waiting list.

Live-donor transplant — related, emotionally-related, altruistic
Deceased-donor transplant via TRANSTAN registry
ABO-incompatible transplant — plasma exchange + rituximab desensitisation
Paired / swap kidney exchange programme — Tamil Nadu first (2018)
Protocol biopsy programme for long-term graft surveillance
>95% 10-year graft survival — exceeding standard benchmark
05
CRRT — Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
CVVHD, CVVH, CVVHDF for critically ill ICU patients
Critical Care+

CRRT is a slow, continuous form of renal replacement therapy used exclusively in the ICU for haemodynamically unstable patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) who cannot tolerate the rapid fluid shifts of conventional haemodialysis. KG Hospital's nephrology and critical care teams deliver 24/7 CRRT with dedicated circuit nursing and daily prescription review. Anticoagulation is individually tailored — citrate, heparin or anticoagulant-free protocols.

Indicated in AKI with haemodynamic instability, septic shock, multiorgan failure
CVVHD, CVVH and CVVHDF modalities — selected per clinical need
Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) — reduces bleeding risk
Daily CRRT dose review by consultant nephrologist + intensivist
Transition to intermittent HD/PD as haemodynamics improve
06
Glomerulonephritis, Vasculitis & Autoimmune Nephritis
Renal biopsy, IgA nephropathy, ANCA vasculitis, lupus nephritis
Biopsy-Guided+

Immune-mediated kidney diseases require expert histopathological diagnosis and complex immunosuppression management. KG Kidney Center performs ultrasound-guided renal biopsies with specialist renal histopathology reporting (light microscopy, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy). RPGN is treated as a medical emergency with urgent biopsy and induction immunosuppression. Plasmapheresis is available for anti-GBM disease and ANCA vasculitis.

IgA nephropathy — RAAS blockade + SGLT2i; sparsentan where indicated
ANCA vasculitis — rituximab induction + azathioprine/MMF maintenance
Lupus nephritis (Class III–V) — joint nephrology-rheumatology clinic
Anti-GBM (Goodpasture's) — urgent plasma exchange + cyclophosphamide
FSGS, membranous GN — tailored immunosuppression protocol

Patient Questions

Frequently Asked

What is the difference between haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis? +
Haemodialysis filters your blood through a machine at a dialysis centre, typically 3 sessions per week, each lasting 3–4 hours. Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen as a natural filter — done daily at home either manually (CAPD) or via an overnight automated cycler (APD). PD offers greater lifestyle flexibility and better preservation of residual kidney function. KGH nephrologists help you choose the right modality based on your clinical condition, lifestyle and home circumstances.
Does KG Hospital perform kidney transplants? +
Yes. KG Hospital has a fully Government-accredited kidney transplant programme. We have performed over 1000+ transplants, offering live-donor, deceased-donor, ABO-incompatible and paired kidney exchange options. Our 1-year graft survival rate is 95%. A dedicated transplant coordinator manages your entire journey from evaluation to discharge and long-term follow-up.
Can CKD be treated without dialysis? +
Absolutely — and this is our primary goal. In CKD Stages 1–4, rigorous management of blood pressure, diabetes, diet and medications (particularly RAAS blockers and SGLT2 inhibitors) can significantly slow or halt progression. KGH's CKD Preservation Clinic focuses on protecting residual kidney function for as long as possible, delaying dialysis by months to years in many patients.
What is CRRT and when is it used? +
CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) is a slow, continuous form of dialysis used in critically ill ICU patients who are too haemodynamically unstable for conventional haemodialysis. It runs 12–24 hours continuously, removing fluid and toxins gently. KGH's nephrology and critical care teams provide round-the-clock CRRT for AKI in sepsis, cardiac surgery, liver failure and other critical conditions.
How do I know if I need to see a nephrologist? +
Consult a nephrologist if you have: swelling in legs or face; foamy, dark or blood-tinged urine; high blood pressure that is hard to control; diabetes with kidney complications (high creatinine, protein in urine); abnormal eGFR or creatinine on blood tests; or a family history of kidney disease. KGH's Renal Screening Clinic requires only a simple blood and urine test — ask your GP for a referral or call us directly.
Does KG Hospital accept CMCHIS and insurance for dialysis? +
Yes. KG Hospital is empanelled with CMCHIS (Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme), ESI, ECHS and most private insurers including Star Health, New India, HDFC Ergo, Bajaj Allianz and 40+ TPA partners. Many patients receive dialysis at no direct cost under these schemes. Contact our billing helpdesk at 0422-4323888 for pre-authorisation and cashless processing assistance.
