What is the difference between asthma and COPD? +
Asthma is usually allergic, often starts in childhood, and airway obstruction is largely reversible with inhalers. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) typically affects smokers or those with long-term exposure to dust/fumes, usually begins after age 40, and airflow limitation is only partially reversible. Both can coexist. A spirometry (PFT) test at KG Hospital can distinguish between them clearly — same-day results.
You should consult a pulmonologist if you experience: persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks, unexplained breathlessness on exertion or at rest, wheezing, coughing up blood, excessive snoring or daytime sleepiness (possible sleep apnoea), recurrent chest infections, or if a chest X-ray or CT scan shows abnormalities. Early evaluation leads to better outcomes.
A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) measures how well your lungs work — how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly. You breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer. The test is painless, takes about 20–30 minutes, and results are available the same day at KG Hospital's NABL-accredited lab. It is the gold standard for diagnosing and staging asthma, COPD, and other lung diseases.
Not at all. A polysomnography is a non-invasive overnight sleep test. You sleep in KG Hospital's dedicated Sleep Lab room while sensors on your scalp, face, chest and legs record brain activity, breathing patterns, oxygen levels and body movements. There are no needles or medications involved. Most patients sleep adequately during the study. Results and a specialist review are provided the next morning.
