Open Repair, EVAR
& 24/7 Emergency Aortic Care

An aortic aneurysm is a dangerous ballooning of the body’s main artery. It usually causes no symptoms until it grows large or ruptures, so timely repair saves lives. At KG Hospital, Coimbatore, the cardiac and vascular surgery teams treat aneurysms of the chest and abdomen with open surgery, the Bentall procedure, arch repair and minimally invasive EVAR, with emergency aortic surgery available 24/7.

What Is an
Aortic Aneurysm?

Quick answer

An aortic aneurysm is a permanent, abnormal widening of the aorta — the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the body — usually to more than one and a half times its normal size. As it grows, the wall becomes weaker and can tear (dissection) or burst (rupture). Aneurysms are treated with regular scans, blood-pressure control and, when they become large, open surgery or a stent-graft (EVAR).

The aorta leaves the heart, arches over in the chest and runs down through the abdomen. Aneurysms are named by where they occur:

  • Aortic root & ascending aorta — just above the heart
  • Aortic arch — where branches go to the head and arms
  • Descending thoracic aorta — in the back of the chest
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) — the most common type

At KG Heart Center, aneurysms of the chest are treated by the cardiac surgery team together with vascular surgery, and abdominal aneurysms by the vascular surgery team.

Marfan syndrome and other connective tissue disorders
Bicuspid aortic valve — see valve surgery
Family history of aortic disease or sudden death
Previous aortic dissection
Some inflammatory and infective conditions

Diagnosis & When
Surgery Is Needed

An abdominal ultrasound is a quick, painless way to find and measure an AAA, and international guidelines recommend screening for men over 65 — especially smokers. Chest aneurysms are often first seen on an echocardiogram or chest scan.

A CT angiogram of the aorta gives the exact size, shape and branches of the aneurysm and is used to plan surgery or EVAR. MR angiography is an alternative for some patients. Smaller aneurysms are monitored with scans at regular intervals, with strict blood-pressure control and stopping smoking.

When is repair usually advised?
AAA (men)About 5.5 cm or larger
AAA (women)About 5.0 cm or larger
Ascending aortaAbout 5.5 cm; lower with Marfan, bicuspid valve or family history
Rapid growthFaster than expected between scans
SymptomsPain or tenderness — urgent review

General thresholds from international guidelines; your surgeon decides based on your aneurysm, body size and overall health.

Aortic Aneurysm Treatment
at KG Hospital

01

Surveillance & Medical Care

For smaller aneurysms: regular ultrasound or CT, blood-pressure control, cholesterol treatment and stopping smoking to slow growth.

Watch
02

Ascending Aorta & Bentall

The enlarged ascending aorta is replaced with a fabric graft. The Bentall procedure replaces the aortic root and valve together for complex root disease.

Open surgery
03

Aortic Arch Surgery

Repair of the arch, where blood vessels to the brain branch off, using circulatory arrest and brain-protection techniques.

Complex
05

Open AAA Repair

The aneurysm is replaced with a graft through an abdominal incision. Preferred when anatomy is unsuitable for EVAR and often for younger patients.

Durable
06

Emergency Aortic Surgery

24/7 surgery for ruptured aneurysms and acute aortic dissection (Type A and B), backed by a round-the-clock perfusion team and cardiac ICU.

Aortic Dissection —
A Surgical Emergency

Quick answer

Aortic dissection is a tear in the inner layer of the aorta that lets blood split the layers of the artery wall. It typically causes sudden, severe, tearing chest or back pain. Type A dissection, involving the ascending aorta, usually needs emergency surgery; Type B dissection, in the descending aorta, is often treated first with medicines to control blood pressure, with repair if complications develop.

Every hour counts in acute aortic dissection. KG Hospital provides 24/7 emergency aortic dissection repair for Type A and B dissections, with immediate CT angiography, an on-call cardiac surgical and perfusion team, intra-operative TOE, and a dedicated cardiac ICU with IABP and ECMO support next to the operating theatres.

Recovery &
Lifelong Follow-Up

After EVAR, most patients walk the next day and go home in 2–3 days. After open chest or abdominal surgery, patients spend time in the cardiac ICU, then the ward, and recover over several weeks at home with gradual return to activity.

Aortic disease is a lifelong condition. Regular scans check the repair and the rest of the aorta, and controlling blood pressure is essential. Because some aneurysms run in families, close relatives may be advised to have screening.

Protecting your aorta
✔ Keep blood pressure well controlled
✔ Stop smoking completely
✔ Take cholesterol medicines as prescribed
✔ Attend every surveillance scan
✔ Avoid very heavy lifting and straining
✔ Ask about screening for close relatives

Aortic Aneurysm Surgery Cost

An aortic aneurysm is a permanent, abnormal widening of the aorta, the body's main artery, usually to more than one and a half times its normal size. It can occur in the chest (thoracic aneurysm) or abdomen (abdominal aortic aneurysm, AAA). As it grows, the wall weakens and can tear or rupture.
International guidelines generally advise repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm at about 5.5 cm in men and 5.0 cm in women, and of an ascending aortic aneurysm at about 5.5 cm — earlier in people with Marfan syndrome, a bicuspid aortic valve or a family history. Rapid growth or symptoms are also reasons for repair.
Yes, many abdominal aortic aneurysms can be treated with EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair). A stent-graft is placed inside the aorta through the groin artery, with no abdominal incision. At KG Hospital, EVAR patients typically spend about a day in ICU and go home in 2–3 days, but they need lifelong scan follow-up.
A rupture usually causes sudden, severe pain in the abdomen, back or chest, often with dizziness, fainting, sweating, a fast pulse or collapse. It is a life-threatening emergency — call 0422-4042121 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
An aneurysm is a bulge or widening of the aorta that usually develops slowly. A dissection is a sudden tear in the inner layer of the aortic wall that lets blood split the layers, causing severe tearing pain. Type A dissection usually needs emergency surgery.
Planned aneurysm repair carries much lower risk than emergency surgery after rupture, which is why aneurysms are repaired once they reach a threshold size. Risks depend on the aneurysm's location, the approach (EVAR or open), age and other health conditions; your surgeon explains your personal risk before you decide.
After EVAR, most people walk the next day and go home in 2–3 days. After open chest or abdominal repair, the hospital stay is longer, including time in the cardiac ICU, and full recovery at home takes several weeks.
Screening with a simple abdominal ultrasound is generally recommended for men over 65, especially current or former smokers, and for people with a close relative who has had an aortic aneurysm. People with Marfan syndrome or a bicuspid aortic valve need regular imaging of the chest aorta.
The cost depends on the aneurysm's location and complexity, whether EVAR or open surgery is used, emergency versus planned treatment and the ICU and hospital stay. KG Hospital gives a written estimate after the surgeon reviews your CT scan, and the insurance desk checks your cover.
